What if we expanded beyond our local market?

Ben Carter, Founder & CEO - VAE Group

For VAE Group, that question marked a defining moment. Established in 1997 with a focus on high-performance HVAC and building technology solutions, the company had built a strong reputation in its home state of Queensland. As opportunities emerged across Australia and internationally, the team recognised the need to think differently about what’s next.

The turning point

With growth ambitions on the horizon, the status quo was no longer enough. To help navigate the next stage of the journey, the team was looking for new perspectives, trusted advice and the right networks. That’s why VAE Group joined Queensland Leaders in 2013.

Queensland Leaders

Through Queensland Leaders, VAE Group gained access to a community of experienced business leaders and industry experts. These connections provided valuable insights and guidance. And a broader perspective on growth.

Equally important was the chance to engage with peers facing similar challenges. The shared experience of the program created a supportive and trusted environment. Ideas tested. Lessons shared. Opportunities explored.

Meaningful outcomes

Since participating in Queensland Leaders, VAE Group has expanded with office locations across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. A significant milestone for the company was surpassing $200 million in annual turnover.

In 2021, VAE Group secured a significant equity investment from a European-based global industry leader. This partnership has supported growth into new markets and continued investment in innovative products and services.

Personal reflection

“Queensland Leaders introduced me to a network of local industry professionals who accelerated my business knowledge and gave me access to their networks to help navigate many of the hurdles a growing company encounters.”

What if…?

For VAE Group, that original question about scaling beyond the local market has evolved into something much bigger.

The goal remains clear – to find a smarter way. What if the next stage of growth could take the business even further, with new partnerships, new markets and new opportunities?

For privately-owned companies in the Queensland Leaders community, the journey often starts the same way.

It starts with a simple question: What if…?
