Managing Mental Health

in a Workplace

Paul Stokes, Managing Director, Artius

As a business owner I am very aware of the impact that employee mental health has on an organisation. With 31% of employee performance problems due to personal or relationship issues, managing mental health in the workplace is becoming increasingly important. In addition to this, stress has been identified as the biggest cause of workplace absence. It has also been found that:

  • On average, 217 million workdays are completely or partially lost among workers aged 18-54 due to mental disorders, translating to an annual cost to business of $17 billion
  • An estimated 1 in 5 working-age Australians will experience a mental illness at some stage in their life
  • Each employee with untreated depression will cost their organisation $9,660 /year

Managing mental health in the workplace is recognised as a key component of any business’s risk management strategy. Implementing an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can help you:

  • Improve employee performance and wellbeing
  • Reduce sick leave and presenteeism
  • Improve employee retention and engagement
  • Reduce Workers Compensation claims
  • Demonstrate employer concern and support for your team

The Artius EAP program addresses these issues by delivering confidential, evidence-based psychological intervention to provide your employee with the tools to address the presenting problem. It has been developed to ensure small to medium sized businesses can provide affordable mental health support to their employees on an as needed basis.
